PC or Mac… Is There Another Choice?

You have probably seen the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads on TV. Not only are they funny, but they continue to cast doubt as to whether Windows is worth the trouble, particularly Vista.

If you have been considering switching to a Mac, you know it is a very stable and easy to learn system, and Macs are rapidly gaining market share from Windows. According to MacWorld, “Apple has seen its share of the US computer market rise 60 per cent in just one year, according to the latest information from NPD.”

Windows is Vulnerable, Mac and Linux aren’t

Unfortunately, Windows, despite its many flaws, still dominates the world. Microsoft still has not ironed out the myriad security problems, making Windows vulnerable to Virus and Spyware attacks. Sadly, if you depend on programs like Simply Accounting and Quickbooks, they do not run on the Mac Operating System, so for some types of programs, Windows is still the only choice. But if you don’t depend on these programs…

You have another choice

Fortunately, there is a little-known third choice. Ubuntu, a popular flavor of Linux, is a free operating system that will run on any existing PC hardware that is 4 years old or newer. Ubuntu has reached a level of maturity now that many people are now using it as an alternative to Windows. Ubuntu has a Windows-like interface, it is very stable and fast, and it does not suffer from Virus or Spyware problems. For many people who use their computers to surf the internet or compose email, Ubuntu will do the job very efficiently. Ubuntu also comes bundled with OpenOffice, which is a replacement for Microsoft Office. It will open and save existing MS office documents. It will also work with most common types of printers. Common functions such as playing music, editing digital photos, or burning and playing DVD’s is easily handled with Ubuntu. You can even connect your iPod! Dell now offers Ubuntu Linux as a Windows alternative, and this clearly shows that Linux is now competing for market share.
