Universal Remotes

There are many universal remotes on the market today – however there is only one universal remote that can really perform as advertised, and it is called Harmony, made by Logitech.

Nearly all the Shaw and Telus remotes can be programmed to operate multiple devices, however with these remotes it is still complicated to automate the input switching.  The Harmony remote automates the switching, and reduces each activity to just one button.  If you want to watch TV, press the TV button.  If you want to watch a DVD, press the VIDEO button, and so on for each activity.  The button pressed activates all the necessary components, and switches the necessary inputs and outputs automatically.

These remotes are expensive, but they are worth the money.  I have seen them range in price from $39 for a basic model which will operate 3 devices, up to $400 for a touchscreen device that will control up to 12 devices.  The more expensive models do not use I/R and therefore do not need to be aimed at the devices, and can be operated from long distances.  This is especially nice for those who have multi-zone receivers and wish to use their remotes in different locations through-out the house.

The remotes are programmed with a computer and require an internet connection to be properly programmed.  The programming utility provided by Logitech requires a user login, and then the user can access a vast database of component drivers for his various devices.  For practically any mainstream brand component, Logitech will likely have the correct driver in its database.

Once programmed, the settings are memorized in the remote and will not need programming again unless the equipment list changes or grows.  If the remote is replaces or upgraded, simply reconnect it to your computer and the new remote will update itself to the previous remote’s settings.

If you are considering a true universal remote, the Logitech Harmony is the only real choice.
